Lighting is an essential component of the reef and planted aquarium and required by any inhabitant that uses light for photosynthesis to generate energy and food. Most aquariums need 10 to 12 hours a day of the appropriate light for healthy growth. Fish and non-photosynthetic life also need a light period to normalize their behaviour cycles for spawning and feeding.
