Anubias Marbled

Overview

Anubias ‘Marbled’ is a stunning, variegated cultivar of the popular Anubias barteri. It is highly prized by collectors for its unique aesthetic, where the leaves feature irregular splashes, streaks, or spots of white or cream color against a deep green background.

  • Appearance: The leaf pattern varies from plant to plant; some may show subtle speckling, while others exhibit dramatic white sectors or “marbled” patches. Like other Anubias, it features thick, leathery leaves and a creeping rhizome.
  • Growth Rate: Very slow. Even slower than many other Anubias varieties because the white portions of the leaves contain less chlorophyll, making them less efficient at photosynthesis.
  • Placement: Best suited for the foreground or attached to hardscape where its high-contrast foliage can stand out.

Tissue culture plants are grown in vitro from a state of the art laboratory specialized in propagating aquatic plants. This means you can enjoy strong and healthy plants free from pests and diseases from the start.

Care Requirements

While it shares the legendary toughness of the Anubias family, its variegation requires a little more attention.

  • Lighting: Moderate. If the lighting is too intense, the white parts of the leaves can easily develop algae. If the light is too dim, the plant may struggle to grow or, in some cases, the variegation might revert to solid green to maximize photosynthetic efficiency.
  • Temperature: 20–28°C.
  • pH Range: 6.0–8.0.
  • Water Hardness: Adaptable; thrives in a wide range of water conditions.
  • CO2/Fertilization: Like other Anubias, it does not require CO2. However, because it is slow-growing, it benefits from a consistent, balanced liquid fertilizer to keep the leaves healthy and resist algae.

Planting and Propagation

Like all Anubias, the rhizome must not be buried in the substrate, or it will rot. Attach it to wood, rock, or other decor using aquarium-safe super glue gel or fishing line.

Maintenance

Maintenance is minimal. Because of its slow growth, it is susceptible to algae on its leaves. Keep the tank clean and ensure you aren’t over-illuminating the tank. If a leaf becomes heavily covered in algae, it is usually better to trim it off rather than try to scrub it, as the leaves can be brittle.

Challenges and Tips

  • Reversion: Sometimes, a ‘Marbled’ plant will start producing solid green leaves. This is often an adaptive response to low light (the plant “realizes” it needs more chlorophyll to survive). If you notice this, slightly increasing the light intensity can sometimes encourage it to return to its variegated pattern.
  • Algae Management: Because the white, variegated parts of the leaf are delicate, avoid high-light, high-nutrient “high-tech” environments that are prone to algae blooms. This plant thrives best in a stable, balanced, lower-light environment.
  • Patience: As with most rare Anubias cultivars, this is a “slow-burn” plant. Do not expect it to cover a large area of your tank quickly.

Benefits in the Aquarium

  • Aesthetics: The white variegation provides a “bright spot” in darker, planted setups, offering a high-contrast visual that is hard to achieve with other slow-growing, hardy plants.
  • Low Maintenance: It is perfect for hobbyists who want a rare, exotic look without the demanding upkeep of fast-growing stem plants.
  • Shrimp Friendly: Like other Anubias, it is hardy and safe for shrimp tanks, providing good grazing surfaces for biofilm.

Recommendation

Anubias ‘Marbled’ is a collector’s plant. I recommend it if you already have experience with basic Anubias (like Anubias nana or barteri) and are looking to add something visually distinct to your collection. Because of its slow growth and potential for algae issues, it is best placed in a well-established, stable aquarium.
