Bacopa Compact

Overview

Bacopa caroliniana ‘Compact’ is a delightful, slow-growing aquarium plant that offers a dense, bushy appearance. It is a smaller, more refined version of the classic Bacopa caroliniana.

  • Appearance: Features thick, fleshy, oval-shaped leaves that are bright green. Unlike the standard species, which grows tall and sparse, the ‘Compact’ variety maintains short internodes, resulting in a very bushy and dense growth habit.
  • Growth Rate: Slow to moderate.
  • Placement: Excellent for the foreground or midground of an aquascape, depending on your tank size and pruning style.

Care Requirements

This plant is relatively undemanding, though it appreciates consistent care to maintain its compact form.

  • Lighting: Moderate to high. Providing sufficient light is the key to keeping the plant short and dense; in low light, it will lose its compactness and become “leggy.”
  • Temperature: 18–28°C.
  • pH Range: 6.0–8.0.
  • Water Hardness: Adapts well to a range of water hardness.
  • CO2: CO2 is not strictly required, but it will grow significantly faster and denser with it.
  • Fertilization: Regular liquid fertilization provides the nutrients necessary for vibrant, healthy leaves.

Planting and Propagation

  • Planting: Plant individual stems 2–3 cm apart in nutrient-rich substrate. Using a pair of tweezers makes planting easier, as the stems can be delicate when young.
  • Propagation: Like most stem plants, propagation is achieved through stem cuttings. Simply snip off a healthy top portion (at least 5–7 cm) and replant it into the substrate. The original stem will continue to grow and often produce side shoots after being trimmed.

Maintenance

  • Trimming: Regular trimming is the most important maintenance task. By cutting the tops, you encourage the plant to branch out, which increases its density.
  • Water Quality: Ensure good water flow around the plant to prevent debris from settling on the dense foliage, which can lead to algae growth.

Challenges and Tips

  • Legginess: If the plant begins to grow tall with large spaces between the leaves (internodes), it is not getting enough light. Increase your light intensity or duration to restore its compact shape.
  • Algae: Due to its slower growth compared to other stem plants, it can occasionally be prone to algae if lighting or nutrients are unbalanced. Keep your tank stable, and if algae appears, gently brush it off or trim the affected leaves.
  • Aesthetic Tip: Because of its unique, uniform shape, it works exceptionally well in “Dutch-style” aquascapes or as a textured accent plant in an Iwagumi-style layout.

Benefits in the Aquarium

  • Visual Texture: It provides a distinct, “cabbage-like” leaf texture that contrasts beautifully with fine-leaf plants (like Rotala or Hairgrass).
  • Ease of Control: Unlike some fast-growing stem plants that can quickly overtake a tank, ‘Compact’ grows slowly, making it easier to maintain the shape of your aquascape over time.
  • Shrimp Friendly: Its dense structure provides excellent hiding spots for shrimp and small fish fry.

Recommendation

Bacopa ‘Compact’ is a fantastic choice for those who love the look of stem plants but don’t want the constant, weekly pruning chore required by faster-growing species. It is highly recommended for midground planting where you want a reliable, neat, and textured green element.
