Description
Catappa Leaves
Catappa leaves, harvested from the Terminalia catappa tree, have been used for centuries by fish breeders in Southeast Asia. When submerged, these leaves release essential tannins and humic acids, mimicking the dark, nutrient-rich “blackwater” rivers of the Amazon and Southeast Asia. They are a must-have for Betta fish, Discus and Apistogrammas.
Features:
- Rich in Tannins: Rapidly releases beneficial organic compounds that tint the water a beautiful, natural amber.
- Natural pH Buffer: Gently lowers pH levels, creating an ideal environment for soft-water species.
- Grade-A Selection: Hand-picked and sun-dried to preserve high concentrations of healing compounds.
- Dual-Purpose: Functions as both a water conditioner and a supplemental food source.
Benefits:
- Antifungal & Antibacterial: Contains natural compounds that help prevent fin rot, fungal infections, and “velvet” in fish.
- Stress Reduction: The dark water mimics natural habitats, making shy fish feel more secure and encouraging vibrant coloration.
- Spawning Trigger: Many tropical species will only breed when they sense the presence of leaf tannins, which signal the start of the “rainy season.”
Tips:
- Rinse First: Give the leaves a quick rinse in freshwater to remove any dust before adding them to the tank.
- Sinking: Initially, the leaves will float. To make them sink instantly, boil them for 2–3 minutes (note: this will remove some of the initial tannins).
- Dosage: Start with 1 leaf per 10 gallons. You can add more as you observe your fish’s reaction and the water color.
- The “Mulm” Benefit: Don’t be in a rush to remove the leaf skeletons. Many fish enjoy hiding under the decaying leaf structure, which provides a long-term source of beneficial microbes.
