Cryptocoryne Pontederifolia ‘Schott’

Overview

Cryptocoryne pontederiifolia, commonly known as a “Crypt,” is a popular aquatic plant in the aquarium trade, native to Southeast Asia, particularly Sumatra and Borneo. This hardy, low-maintenance plant from the Araceae family is prized for its attractive, broad, heart-shaped leaves with a glossy green surface and pinkish-red undersides. It grows to a height of 10–30 cm and is suitable for midground or background placement in aquariums. Its adaptability to various water conditions makes it ideal for both beginners and experienced aquarists.

Tissue culture plants are grown in vitro from a state of the art laboratory specialized in propagating aquatic plants. This means you can enjoy strong and healthy plants free from pests and diseases from the start.

Care Requirements

Lighting: Low to moderate lighting (10–20 µmol PAR). Excessive light may cause algae growth on leaves.

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 22–28°C
  • pH: 6.0–7.5 (slightly acidic to neutral)
  • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard (2–15 dGH)

Substrate: Nutrient-rich substrate (e.g., aquarium soil, laterite, or enriched gravel) promotes robust growth. Sand or gravel with root tabs also works.

Nutrients: Benefits from liquid fertilizers (e.g., iron and potassium-based) and root tabs for optimal health.

CO2: Not required but can enhance growth in high-tech setups (10–20 ppm).

Tank Requirements: Ideal for low-tech tanks due to its adaptability. Combines well with other Cryptocoryne species, Anubias, or Java fern for a natural look.

Planting and Propagation

Planting:

  • Plant the roots in the substrate, leaving the crown (where leaves emerge) exposed to prevent rot.
  • Space plants 2–3 inches apart to allow runners to spread.
  • Use tweezers for precise planting in dense aquascapes.

Propagation:

  • Cryptocoryne pontederiifolia propagates via runners, which produce daughter plants.
  • Once daughter plants develop 3–5 leaves and a small root system, gently cut the runner and replant elsewhere.
  • Propagation is slow but reliable in stable conditions.

Maintenance

  • Trimming: Remove yellowing or damaged leaves at the base with scissors to encourage new growth.
  • Cleaning: Gently rinse leaves during water changes to remove algae or debris.
  • Water Changes: Perform regular 20–30% water changes weekly to maintain water quality and prevent nutrient imbalances.
  • Monitoring: Check for “Crypt melt” (leaf loss due to environmental changes). New growth typically follows if conditions stabilize.

Challenges and Tips

Challenges:

  • Crypt Melt: Sudden changes in water parameters, lighting, or transplanting can cause leaves to melt.
  • Maintain stable conditions to minimize this.
  • Slow Growth: Growth can be sluggish in low-nutrient or low-light setups.
  • Algae: Broad leaves attract algae in high-light conditions. Use algae eaters like shrimp or nerite snails.

Tips:

  • Avoid frequent replanting, as Crypts prefer to establish roots over time.
  • Pair with fish or invertebrates that won’t disturb roots.
  • Use a nutrient-rich substrate or supplement with root tabs every 3–6 months for lush growth.
  • If melting occurs, resist removing the plant; new leaves often emerge within weeks.

Recommendation

  • Aquarium Setup: Ideal for low-tech tanks due to its adaptability. Combines well with other Cryptocoryne species, Anubias, or Java fern for a natural look.
  • Companions: Pair with peaceful fish like rasboras, guppies, or corydoras, and invertebrates.
  • Beginner-Friendly: Its hardiness and low CO2/light demands make it perfect for novice aquarists.
Aesthetic Use: Use in midground to create a lush, green focal point or background to add depth.
