Philippine Yellow Tang (Acanthurus pyroferus)

Overview

The Philippine Yellow Tang (Acanthurus pyroferus) is a fascinating member of the surgeonfish family, widely known in the aquarium trade as the Mimic Tang or Chocolate Surgeonfish.

It is highly prized by hobbyists for its unique “mimicry” phase as a juvenile and its role as an effective algae grazer.

    Important Transformation

    • Juvenile Phase: It is almost entirely bright yellow, mimicking the appearance of various dwarf angelfish (such as the Lemonpeel Angel, Centropyge flavissima). This disguise helps the young tang safely forage on reefs without being perceived as a threat.
    • Adult Phase: As it matures, the fish undergoes a dramatic color shift, turning into a deep, chocolate-brown/tan color with dark edges and bright accents. It loses its yellow “angelfish” look entirely.

    Care Requirements

    • Tank Size: While a juvenile can start in a 300 litre aquarium, you must plan for a 480+ litre tank with significant horizontal swimming space as the fish matures into its adult form.
    • Aquascaping: Provide a balance of open swimming areas and live rock formations with plenty of crevices for grazing and nocturnal security.
    • Water Parameters:
      • Temperature: 23–27°C.
      • Salinity: 1.020–1.025 SG.
      • pH: 8.1–8.4.

    Maintenance

They are high-metabolism fish that produce significant waste. Ensure you have high-capacity filtration and perform regular water changes (10–20% bi-weekly) to keep nitrates and phosphates low.

    Diet

This fish is an active grazer that requires high-quality nutrition to prevent “Lateral Line Erosion” (a common stress and diet-related illness in tangs).

    • Staple Diet: Constant access to algae is critical. Provide nori (dried seaweed sheets) on a clip daily. Supplement with high-quality herbivore-specific pellets and flakes.
    • Occasional Treats: Offer meaty foods like mysis or brine shrimp 2–3 times a week to provide necessary protein for healthy growth and immune support.

    Behavior and Compatibility

    • Temperament: Generally semi-aggressive. They can be territorial toward other tangs, especially those with similar shapes or colors.
    • Compatibility: They are excellent in community reef tanks. It is best to introduce them as one of the last fish to minimize territorial disputes.
    • Reef Safety: They are “reef safe with caution.” While they are fantastic at cleaning rocks, they may occasionally nip at soft or large-polyp stony (LPS) corals if their diet lacks sufficient algae variety.

    Reproduction

There are no successful reports of captive breeding in home aquariums.

    Tips

    • Quarantine: Like many surgeonfish, they are prone to Cryptocaryon (Marine Ich). A proper quarantine period is highly recommended before adding them to your display tank.
    • Acclimatization: Juveniles can be shy initially. Ensure the tank is well-lit but has plenty of hiding places so they can feel secure while they learn their environment.
    • “Vitamin-Boost”: Soak their food in supplements like Selcon or Vita-Chem occasionally to boost their immune system and enhance their natural coloration.
