Description
Yellow Angelfish (Centropyge heraldi)
Overview
The Yellow Angelfish (Centropyge heraldi), also widely known as the Herald’s Angelfish or False Lemonpeel Angelfish, is a beautiful and relatively peaceful member of the dwarf angelfish family. Its stunning, solid-yellow coloration makes it a sought-after addition to marine tanks, though it requires specific care to thrive.
- Size: Grows to approximately 10 cm.
- Lifespan: 5+ years in a well-maintained environment.
- Temperament: Semi-aggressive (territorial toward other dwarf angels, but generally peaceful with other fish).
Care Requirements
- Tank Size: Minimum of 100 liters. A larger tank is better, especially if you intend to keep other fish, as it helps disperse territorial behavior.
- Environment: They thrive in established aquariums with plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding. They are somewhat shy when first introduced and appreciate having multiple caves and crevices.
- Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–28°C
- Salinity: 1.020–1.025 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
Maintenance
- Water Quality: Like all marine fish, consistent water quality is paramount. Perform 10–20% water changes every two weeks.
- Rockwork: Ensure your aquascaping is stable and provides plenty of surface area for natural algae growth, which serves as a vital part of their diet.
Diet
Like most dwarf angelfish, they are omnivores with a strong need for grazing.
- Grazing: They will spend much of their day picking at micro-algae on rocks.
- Supplementation: Provide a varied diet including high-quality marine pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and spirulina-enriched preparations.
- Consistency: Feed small amounts 2–3 times daily to keep them active and healthy.
Behavior and Compatibility
- Reef Safety (Caution): They are considered “reef safe with caution.” While many individuals are fine, some may develop a taste for certain soft corals, LPS (Large Polyp Stony) corals, or clam mantles. Monitor them closely if you have a coral-heavy tank.
- Tank Mates: Best housed with peaceful to semi-aggressive fish. Avoid housing them with other Centropyge species (other dwarf angels) in smaller tanks, as they will fight for territory.
Reproduction
The Yellow Angelfish (Centropyge heraldi), like other members of the Centropyge genus, is notoriously difficult to breed in a home aquarium. While they do spawn in captivity, successfully raising the larvae is an immense challenge.
Tips
- Dietary Variety: If your fish seems disinterested in prepared foods, try garlic-soaked frozen mysis or spirulina, which often helps stimulate their appetite.
- Acclimation: These fish can be sensitive to environmental shifts. Take your time with the drip-acclimation process when first introducing them to your display tank.
- Avoid “Lemonpeel” Confusion: They are often confused with the Lemonpeel Angelfish (Centropyge flavissima). You can tell the Herald’s apart by the lack of the distinct blue eye-ring and blue outline on the gill cover that characterizes the true Lemonpeel.
