Description
Sunshine Pleco (Scobiancistrus aureatus) L014
Overview
The Sunshine Pleco (Scobiancistrus aureatus), also known by its L-number designation L014, is a striking, highly sought-after armored catfish native to the fast-flowing, rocky waters of the Xingu and Tapajós River basins in the Amazon drainage of Brazil.
- Appearance: Features a robust, flattened body covered in heavy armor plating. Its most stunning characteristic is its dark, velvety brown to black background completely dotted with bright golden-yellow spots across its entire body, head, and fins, accented by vibrant orange or yellow edging along its dorsal and caudal fins. It possesses specialized odontodes and a sucker-mouth adapted for scraping.
- Size: Grows to a substantial adult size, typically reaching 25 to 30 cm (10 to 12 inches) in length.
- Lifespan: Highly long-lived, often surviving 10 to 15 years or more with excellent care.
Care Requirements
- Aquarium Size: Because of their large adult size and heavy bioload, a minimum aquarium size of 300 to 400 liters (approx. 4 feet or 120 cm in length) is recommended for an adult specimen.
- Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24°C to 29°C (75°F to 84°F)
- pH: 6.5 to 7.5 (prefers slightly acidic to neutral water)
- General Hardness (GH): 2 to 15°H (soft to moderately hard water)
- Filtration & Flow: Heavy-duty filtration with robust water movement and strong aeration is essential. They originate from high-oxygen, fast-flowing rivers and thrive in environments with good current and clean water.
Maintenance
- Aquascaping: Replicate a rocky river biotope using a smooth sand or fine gravel substrate, heavy driftwood structures to create natural caves and hiding spots, and large, smooth river stones. Providing plenty of secure hiding spots is crucial, as they are territorial and nocturnal.
- Water Quality & Changes: Perform routine partial water changes (25% to 30% weekly) to maintain pristine conditions. They are sensitive to high nitrates and organic accumulation.
Diet
- Nature: Unlike many vegetarian plecos, the Sunshine Pleco is primarily a carnivorous/omnivorous benthivore. In the wild, it uses its powerful specialized teeth to feed on periphyton, aquatic insects, snails, and organic matter.
- Staple Diet: High-quality sinking carnivorous or omnivorous pellets, sinking shrimp wafers, and protein-rich tablets.
- Protein Supplementation: Supplement their diet regularly with meaty foods such as frozen bloodworms, chopped prawns, mysis shrimp, and earthworm pieces. They also appreciate occasional vegetable matter like zucchini or shelled peas, but animal protein should make up a core part of their diet.
Behaviour and Compatibility
- Temperament: Generally peaceful with other species, but can display territorial aggression toward other bottom-dwellers and large plecos, especially if hiding spaces are limited. They occupy the bottom-most level of the aquarium.
- Social Needs: Best kept singly unless housed in a massive aquarium with ample territory and distinct, separate caves for each individual.
- Tank Mates: Ideal for large, robust community setups. Good companions include large active mid-water schooling fish (like large tetras or rainbowfish) and peaceful cichlids. Avoid housing them with timid bottom-dwellers that might be bullied or tiny nano fish.
Breeding Behaviour
- Spawning Setup: Breeding Sunshine Plecos in home aquariums is extremely rare and considered an advanced expert-level achievement, typically requiring large commercial ponds or specialized tanks with powerful current, smooth slate or PVC caves, and pristine water parameters.
- The Process: In nature, males claim a deep cave or rock crevice as a spawning site, intensely guarding it and courting females. Once spawning occurs, the male takes over exclusive parental care, guarding and fanning the adhesive eggs until they hatch.
- Raising Fry: The fry require clean, well-oxygenated water, micro-foods, and fine protein-rich foods to grow successfully.
